As I scrolled through the news articles and photos of yesterday’s shopping bonanza called Black Friday, I wondered what is happening to us as a society. There was pushing, shoving and fighting over items. There were threats made with guns, gestures and words. There were people being wrestled to the ground and arrested. Why have these things occurred?

There were people camping out in front of stores, days in advance, just to be the first to dash inside to get bargains on things that they don’t need. In one story, a woman was interviewed about her experience and in the course of the interview; she stated that she still had stuff unopened that she had purchased the year before. So tell me, how was that a bargain? Another lady boasted that she and family members had scored numerous television sets. Why?

What is it about stuff that would make you gobble down your Thanksgiving meal, so you can rush to an overcrowded store, to fight over said stuff? Are people that deprived that this foolishness has become the norm? I think not considering it’s the same bunch every year. And these same people are usually the ones complaining about being in debt come January. The holidays have turned into Gimmedays. Everyone is out to get what they can get, at the expense of others and sometimes themselves, as with the couple that was run down by the alleged drunk driver in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

I have never needed nor wanted something so bad that I had to subject myself to this madness. I have better things to do with my time, than stand out in the cold at 1 am in the morning just to get a set of sheets, or coffee maker. We as a society have turned away from values that once defined us positively. What we value now are things, and more things; stuff that we want (but don’t need) so that we can brag to our friends, neighbors, family, etc about owning.

Why are our lives consumed with the material, and not with making our families and relationships stronger and more loving? We need to let go of this foolishness and start taking note of what is going on around us; in our homes, cities and world.

We need more love not more STUFF!
